Overview

A clay brick fence wall is a 4–5 day job for a 50m perimeter with a 2-person mason team plus labour. Material cost at 2026 rates: ~GH₵11,000–15,000 for bricks and mortar. All-in cost (including foundation, gate, labour): GH₵18,000–28,000 depending on finishes.

Step 1: Foundation

Dig a trench 600mm deep × 450mm wide along the full perimeter. Pour a concrete strip footing (1:2:4 ratio, 450mm wide × 200mm deep). Let cure 3–5 days before starting brickwork.

Step 2: First course + DPC

Lay damp-proof course (polythene sheet or bituminous felt) over the cured footing. First course of brick goes on top. This stops moisture rising into the wall.

Step 3: Piers every 3m

Build 340×340mm piers every 3–4m along the wall. These carry the structural load and let you build a taller, straighter wall. At corners and gate openings, piers are essential.

Step 4: Courses between piers

Fill in between piers in running bond. Check level every 3 courses. For a 1.8m wall, that is roughly 24 courses with 10mm mortar joints.

Step 5: Cap

Finish the top with a cap course — either a special coping brick on edge, or a precast concrete coping. The cap sheds water off the wall. Without it, water collects in the top joints and eventually breaks the wall down.

Step 6: Gates

Gate posts must be full-height piers, ideally reinforced with 2 vertical rebars cast into the pier core. Pour concrete into the pier void, tied to footing steel. This is the difference between a gate that swings true for 30 years and one that droops in 2.
