The universal formula

Clay brick quantity = (wall area in m²) × (bricks per m² for your wall thickness) × (1 + wastage %)

  • 115mm single-leaf wall: ~60 bricks per m²
  • 230mm double-leaf wall: ~120 bricks per m²
  • 340mm thick wall (piers / columns): ~180 bricks per m²
  • Wastage allowance: 5% for simple layouts, 7–8% for patterns / decorative work

Example 1: Simple room

A 4m × 3m room with 3m-high 230mm external walls, one door (0.9m × 2.1m), two windows (1.2m × 1.2m each):

  • Wall perimeter: 14m
  • Wall area: 14m × 3m = 42 m²
  • Subtract openings: 0.9×2.1 + 2×(1.2×1.2) = 1.89 + 2.88 = 4.77 m²
  • Net wall area: 42 − 4.77 = 37.23 m²
  • Bricks: 37.23 × 120 = 4,468 bricks
  • Add 5% wastage: 4,468 × 1.05 = 4,691 bricks → round to 4,700

Example 2: Boundary wall

60m × 1.8m-high single-leaf 115mm wall:

  • 60 × 1.8 = 108 m²
  • 108 × 60 = 6,480 bricks
  • Piers (one every 4m, 15 piers × ~50 extra bricks each): +750 bricks
  • Cap course: +350 bricks
  • Total: 7,580 bricks, add 5% = 7,959 → round to 8,000
