How Many Bricks to Build a 3-Bedroom House in Ghana

Quick answer

A typical 3-bedroom bungalow in Ghana, built with fair-faced clay brick walls in a concrete frame, uses about 15,000 of our standard bricks; a 2-bedroom about 12,000. Add about 5,750–6,900 for a 50–60m boundary wall.

These are real-world figures for a single-storey build with single-leaf walls (one brick thick, 114 mm) inside a concrete frame of columns, lintels and a ring beam, the common Ghanaian method. Double-leaf walls, taller walls or a two-storey build need more.

The formula

Use this formula to calculate any wall or building:

• •Wall area (m²) × bricks per m² = total bricks
• •Our standard perforated brick (203 × 114 × 64 mm): 64 bricks per m² for a single-leaf wall at 10 mm joints
• •Double-leaf wall: ~128 bricks per m²
• •Add 5% wastage allowance for cuts, breakage, and corner adjustments

Worked example — 3-bedroom bungalow

Assume: about 110 m² floor area, an external wall perimeter of 42m, walls 3m high, and about 50 linear metres of internal walls, all single-leaf inside a concrete frame.

• •External walls: 42m × 3m = 126 m². Internal walls: 50m × 3m = 150 m².
• •Total wall area: 276 m² × 64 bricks per m² = 17,664 bricks.
• •Subtract about 20% for doors, windows and the concrete columns and ring beam: 17,664 × 0.80 = 14,131 bricks.
• •Add 5% wastage: 14,131 × 1.05 = 14,838 bricks.
• •Round up: about 15,000 bricks for the walls.

Boundary / fence wall

Add ~115 bricks per running metre for a 1.8m-high single-leaf boundary wall. A typical 50–60m perimeter for a 3-bedroom plot adds about 5,750–6,900 bricks.
