Most Ghanaian masons learned on sandcrete blocks. Clay brick demands a different hand — softer mortar, tighter joints, cleaner cuts. This course rewires the fundamentals.

Over two days you lay real brick panels under instruction, not just watch demos. You leave with a certificate and the confidence to quote clay brick jobs.

What you'll leave able to do

  • Lay a straight, level clay brick course
  • Mix the correct mortar for clay brick (different from block mortar)
  • Work three bond patterns: running, English, Flemish
  • Cut clay bricks cleanly with a bolster and hammer
  • Read a simple brick course plan

Curriculum

Day 1 — Foundations

  • Clay brick vs sandcrete — material properties and why techniques differ
  • Safe handling, site setup, and tool familiarisation
  • Mortar mix ratios for clay (softer than block mortar) and why over-strength mortar cracks walls
  • Laying a straight course — line, level, and plumb
  • Running bond — the everyday workhorse pattern

Day 2 — Patterns & Practice

  • English bond and Flemish bond — when and why to use each
  • Cutting bricks cleanly — bolster, hammer, and reading the grain
  • Corners and returns
  • Pointing and joint finishing
  • Assessment — lay a 1m × 1m panel to spec

Schedule

Runs monthly in Accra. Two-day intensive weekend format.

No experience required. Basic reading and measurement skills recommended.
